Multi-agent coding starts with task boundaries.
Running several coding agents can increase parallel work, but it also increases coordination and review. Assign independent outcomes, name one integrator, and verify the combined result.
When parallel agents help
Parallel work is useful when tasks can progress independently and their outputs have clear boundaries. Research, documentation, isolated tests, and changes to separate modules may be easier to coordinate than several agents editing the same central file.
If one task depends on another decision, keep the dependency explicit and sequence it. Starting every agent at once can create rework instead of speed.
Split work so agents do not collide
Write one shared brief, then make each assignment small enough to review. State what files an agent owns, what it must leave untouched, what evidence it should return, and who will integrate its work.
- 01
Set one outcome
Describe the project goal and constraints once so each agent starts from the same context.
- 02
Assign disjoint ownership
Give agents separate files or modules. Use separate branches or worktrees when their edits may overlap.
- 03
Ask for evidence
Request changed files, commands run, results, and any unresolved assumptions.
- 04
Integrate deliberately
Choose one owner to combine changes, resolve conflicts, and decide which output is kept.
- 05
Verify the combined change
Run relevant checks on the integrated result; individual agent checks do not cover integration behavior.
Account for coordination cost
Every extra agent adds context to review. More sessions do not mean more independent capacity when they edit the same files, depend on a shared decision, or produce work one person cannot inspect.
How ProofSwarm handles a squad
ProofStack's Swarm gives a five-agent squad one brief with named roles, task assignments, and a live feed for messages. You approve a launch and can follow what each agent reports. That visibility helps coordination, but it does not isolate file edits or guarantee a conflict-free merge; set ownership and review changes yourself.
