AI coding agents need a workspace you can review.
A coding agent can inspect a project, propose edits, and use tools under a configured permission model. Your workflow determines whether those actions stay understandable and reviewable.
What an AI coding agent does
An AI coding agent works with a codebase through a CLI, editor, or hosted development environment. Depending on the tool and permissions, it can read files, edit code, run commands, and report what it found. Exact behavior differs by product and changes as tools update.
Examples developers may run locally include Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor Agent, GitHub Copilot CLI, and other compatible tools. ProofStack runs supported, installed CLIs in visible terminal panes; it does not bundle their models or replace their accounts.
How to choose a coding-agent setup
Compare the workflow around an agent, not only a model name. Before adopting a tool, check how it accesses source, asks before consequential actions, shows edits, handles provider credentials, and fits your existing test and release process.
- Repository access: local checkout, hosted workspace, or editor-managed project.
- Control: permission prompts, sandboxing, and the ability to stop a run.
- Review: readable diffs, command output, and clear handoff of unfinished work.
- Compatibility: operating system, terminal, editor, and provider account requirements.
- Cost: subscription or API billing from the provider, separate from the workspace UI.
One agent, several agents, one reviewer
A single agent is often the simplest choice for a focused change. Multiple agents can help with independent work, but they create coordination costs: duplicated context, overlapping edits, inconsistent assumptions, and a larger review surface.
Give each agent a clear deliverable and file boundary. Keep a person responsible for integration, check the combined diff, and run project-specific verification after changes come together.
Where ProofStack fits
ProofStack is a desktop workspace around coding CLIs you already install and authenticate. ProofSpace keeps sessions in visible panes, ProofSwarm coordinates a five-agent squad, and ProofCheck scans working-tree changes for selected vulnerability patterns with file-and-line evidence.
Those features help you follow work; they do not guarantee agent output is correct, resolve every merge conflict, or replace your tests and security review.
