ProofStack field guide
A security checklist for vibe coding.
AI can move quickly through a codebase. Use this checklist to direct human review toward access control, untrusted input, secrets, dependencies, and the limits of automated scans.
Before an agent edits code
Give the agent only the repository and tools needed for the task. Keep secrets out of prompts and committed instructions. Review permission settings before allowing commands that install dependencies, access credentials, or make network or production changes.
- Use a non-production checkout for experimental changes.
- Do not paste API keys, access tokens, private customer data, or production secrets into prompts.
- Keep approval prompts enabled for consequential commands and file access.
When reviewing generated code
Inspect security boundaries in the changed code, not just the feature's happy path. Ask how a user controls the data, what permissions are checked, and how invalid or hostile input is handled.
- Authentication: does the code verify identity on the server where needed?
- Authorization: can one user access another user's records or actions?
- Input handling: are paths, URLs, SQL, HTML, and shell arguments validated or safely encoded?
- Secrets: did a key, token, private URL, or environment value enter source, logs, or screenshots?
- Dependencies: did the change add or upgrade packages, and were their purpose and source reviewed?
- Tests: do checks cover denied access, invalid input, and failure paths as well as success?
Before merge or release
Run relevant tests and inspect the full diff after generated edits settle. Review dependency and secret-scan findings. If a security check did not run, record that limitation and choose a manual review or another check before release.
ProofCheck can report selected dependency CVEs, exposed secrets, and unsafe patterns in changed code. Its findings are evidence to investigate, not a security score; a clean result does not prove software is free of vulnerabilities.
Keep a person accountable for the result
Security depends on the product's threat model and surrounding system. Keep someone responsible for reviewing the generated changes, deciding whether evidence is sufficient, and approving deployment. No prompt, agent, or scanner can make that decision on your behalf.
