Claude Code vs Codex: Compare the Workflow, Not the Hype
A fair workflow comparison for Claude Code and Codex: compare the same task, review permissions and evidence, and decide whether one or both fit.

What this comparison can and cannot tell you
Claude Code and OpenAI Codex are coding-agent tools with their own installation, authentication, models, permissions, and supported environments. Those details change over time. This page compares how to evaluate their workflows; it does not claim one agent is universally more accurate or faster.
Use Anthropic's current Claude Code documentation and OpenAI's current Codex documentation for installation, supported features, and billing. Check the terms and requirements for the account or service you use.
Compare them on the same bounded task
A fair comparison holds the repository, task, initial state, permission level, and verification steps as steady as practical. Avoid choosing from one impressive answer or one failure; inspect the work each tool produces in your codebase.
- 01
Choose a real task
Pick a scoped bug or feature with observable acceptance criteria, not an open-ended request.
- 02
Use equivalent starting context
Provide each agent the same project instructions and relevant constraints.
- 03
Keep permissions comparable
Use the approval and network settings you would actually permit in that project.
- 04
Review the same evidence
Compare diffs, relevant test results, command visibility, and unresolved assumptions.
- 05
Record what matters
Note which workflow fit your repository and review process. Do not generalize one run into a universal ranking.
Choose one agent or use both
If one CLI fits your project and provider setup, using one may be enough. If you already use both, give them separate tasks or ask one to review the other's bounded change. Parallel edits to the same files can create conflicts, regardless of model or brand.
ProofStack can run compatible local coding CLIs such as Claude Code and Codex in visible terminal panes. It organizes those sessions; each provider's account, usage, and feature set remain separate.
A short decision checklist
Choose based on your supported environment, account and billing model, permission controls, repository fit, and the quality of evidence you can review. Re-run the comparison when a material tool or model update changes the workflow you depend on.
- Can it work in your operating system and repository setup?
- Can you understand and control the commands and file changes it makes?
- Can you use the provider account and billing model you intend to keep?
- Can your normal tests and reviewers verify the resulting changes?
